sounds cool... I have been reading on Overgrow that guys have been getting awesome results using several 40watt UVB tubes for a few hours a day, dosing up their plants a better than natural light but not enough to damage them. Be careful cause UVB is downright dangerous.

yeah, i read your post, i know why you have em LoL

those tanning bed lights only give off a small amount of UVB though. You can get tubes that put out way more UVB for better results, or so i hear.

I was intrigued by this discussion of more THC in the tricome with UV-B radiation, so I did some more reading about some lighting options that have good UV-B output...

I was thinking: wouldn't it be nice if there was a cheap, easy HID solution to this puzzle? Well there is, Mercury Vapor!!! I have been using MV lights for veg, and in flowering I use MV and HPS. I was using them before as a cheap HID solution, now I keep using them for the UV-B.

I have notices heavy tricome development on my plants in their 3rd week of flowering, now I'm not positive that the MV is totally responsible for this, but reading this article: The Chemical Ecology of Cannabis I think it probably is.

Anyways enough rambling, I bought the MV lamp and ballast from wallmart for $25.44 and re-wired it have a remote ballast. It was very easy to do, far more simple than a HPS security light re-wiring.

Well here's a picture of the light from wallmart (175W) and a pic of one of my plants flowered under MV and HPS 3 1/2 weeks in flowering. (10x magnification)

The plant is not finished for a couple of weeks or so yet, but I'll let you know if it is any more potent than it's mother was

PS. If you decide to use one of these MV lamps in your growroom, wear some sunglasses, UV radiation is bad for the eyes.

just thought I would mention...1st time grow...money issues...I have 2 ladies that are 3 and a 1/2 weeks into flowering here... crystals/budding galore. I am using 2 lights & reflectors from a pet shop( bulbs $8.00 each, reflectors $10.00 each). The bulbs are 150 watt reptile basking lights. I supplement the lights with compact fluorecents to the sides of the plants...In the long run I wanna change to a more conventional light sourse, but I gotta say for the cash these lights are not that bad...peace

Your an encouragement to me I guess you would say. I bought two of those lights, almost the same, different brand. I found one on the shelf that put out 7850 lumens instead of the traditional 7000 that the rest had. Im vegging with these, hopefully it turns out as expected!

It will I had 2 plants that vegged under them almost entirely and they turned out good, was just smoking one of them a few minutes ago, as a matter of fact it was the bud in the pic above... The addition of these lights to HPS in flowering is where you will see the big difference, as the plant produces more THC to protect itself from the UV-B output, as for the higher lumen output, that is all in the bulb, a good Phillips, or Sylvania bulb puts out about 8,000 lumens, but when you get around to flowering, get a 150w HPS security light and rewire it to be remote ballasted. This will help the yield greatly, it's only about $80, and you will get your money's worth for it in bud production, as you will with any other HPS, but enough rambling for me tonight...

    Peace
