I don't think the issue is whether or not he should be checking expiry dates..I mean, sure... it's good practice to check the food you're about to consume..

So after watching some samurai japense movie were like hey lets gget some food. so we go to the kitchen and i snag some oreos and plenty of milk and I just leave him up to finding his own food in my house.
