my second closet growing attempt!
They will start to smell probably in a week or two. For flowering you will want to get a light that has a 2700k color temperature, as this wavelength encourages flowering. You can use warm white CFLs, or a high pressure sodium lamp. The HPS will be your best bet, but expect to pay between $100-200 on a good hps light.
