How to keep plants small?

Thanks a load. So if I keep it in a pretty small pot and top it, will that effectivley reduce its height? I would rather have it wide than tall.

Hi, this might sound like a stupid question but how can I keep my plant's under around 7 inches but still get a little free smoke from them?
