I need suggestions for a well written piece of music...

    hi all,

So I got a call from my mom and dad yesterday, and they said if I wanted to go back to school then they would put me back in.

I've been giving this thought for many years and I decided to just go for a music program at the college. You learn theory, etc...everything you need to know about music and aspects of it. Not only will it branch out my style, but it leads me in the right direction. I think it'd be a lot of fun to teach guitar at a college. It'd be good money, great experience, and a lot of fun to do everyday.

Anyways, in order for me to get accepeted, I have to perform a piece of music of my choice in an audition. I play tons of heavy music that would make your balls tingle (or is it just me?), but I need a well written piece of music that would wow the judges. I have 3 months to practice and get it down or I'll have to wait until Sept. of 07.

Any suggestions people? Keep the songs acceptable. I can play Lamb of God and Slayer like no tomorrow, but I need to find something that is a little more mellow, with chord changes and clean tones. I was thinking a Led Zeppelin song, not Stairway , but maybe Over the Hills.....that has single notes, chords, and solo. Help me out here!

    yay

if you can play pachelbel, Kanon, then that would make em happy

but it would be hard to find that for guitar

    try some Joe Satriani

    I'll look into some Satriani.

Oh boy, I just looked into this a little deeper. It's a one year prep program and I need a certain % in a class, which I already have, but these are the other requirements:

    1. A polished performance of two constrasting pieces of your choice that demonstrate your playing or singing abilities.
    2. A demonstration of technical skills appropriate to your instrument (eg. vocalises for singers; scales, chords, arpeggios, long tones, tonguing, etc. as appropriate for pianists and other instrumentalists).
    3. Aural tests (eg. recognition of chord qualities and melodic intervals, clapback of rhythmic patterns).
    4. Playing or singing a short unfamiliar excerpt at sight.
    5. A brief interview to discuss your musical background, interests and goals.

Whoo boy. I'm pushing this back to Sept. of 07. I have a lot of learning to do boy. A lot of the stuff I once did learn, but I got lazy and drunk for a number of years and all that flew out of my brains.

And LIP, you silly man you.

i'm not sure, if rock is your style, you need to stick to that style, because it is you, and changing that would make you 'fake', with that being said, i would say some nirvana (the slower songs, not the rape your ears type, although i like that type, i doubt it would really impress them) or maybe some metallica, everyone can relate to metallica, hell i've know full blown thugs who listen to metallica.... i'm not sure of a song by nirvanna, but i think one by metallica is right up your alley... you're almost gonna definately want some rock from the 80's if you take my advice, as it was always really saturated with guitar... but this is just my suggestion, in the end it needs to be something you feel is your style, and ultimately it's all your choice. but you have to admit, metallica songs played on the guitar solo almost always sound good.

I say do something by Andrew York. I'm actually majoring in music in college and I played one of his pieces for one of my recitals. My teachers totally loved it.

You should probably have a few prepared pieces though, they also love classical guitar. I mean thats pretty much the majority of what you learn in college anyway.

That's a good point Slipknot. I wouldn't want to come off being or playing something I really didn't want to. I bet someone playing some technical, clean sounding tones of mellowness is something they see all the time. Maybe if I tossed some classic rock in there and some of my own playing styles of heavy music would really surprise them.

I can play about 75% of Metallica's Master O.P album without a hitch. I think Blackened has an amazing opening riff and has been one of favs of all time.

I need 2 songs, but I also need to re-learn all the theory that goes with it.

Thanks for the suggestion Slipknot.

How's your mouth feeling these days? Got any leafy green substance to help aid it yet?
