I've read on here that the plants need total undisturbed darkness untill lights are scheduled to go back on....

So could someone tell me if this is true or not...and tell me what could happen if they are disturbed when lights are out?
Looking at them while they sleep is not going to harm them..no. But your friend shouldn't be making it a habit either. Ask him how he would like it if someone came into his room every night after he had gone to bed and snooped around.

if he makes it a habit and does it every night carelessly.. yes.. it could affect the plant. But looking at it a few times at night during the grow won't hurt.

Then they remain in veg. status, but slow veg. status because they're getting the light ransoned.

hmmm... then why do you need to turn the lights on for a good 10 minutes every night for a good 10-14 days in order to hermie a plant?

Consider this, if you were growing at night would the stars and moon create a pitch black atmosphere? No...
