Can you drill a hole in glass ?

Also you can use a carbide bit as long as it is not tempered glass. Bottles aren't usually tempered just pyrex, borosilicate...
I like the Diamonds, they don't care what you want to cut.

I want to make my own bong , and I have a really nice piece of glassware i want to use , and then add my own bowl etc. Can this be done ? Use a water oil mix....water does not make for a smooth cut. Also I dont know if trying to drill extremely hot glass is a good idea, that would probably fry most bits. Im a mechanic and do allot of that stuff but never really tried drilling through real hot glass.

Use a diamond bit, you can get a whole set on ebay under $10. Use a dremel or a drill. Water will make it cut faster and cool the bit. If you use a dremel at a high speed with out water, you will melt the nickel plating, which is holding your diamonds in place. Then, you can throw that bit away.

Not true,,,I made countless holes with a dremmel diamond bit w/out water,,,they are relatively cheap too,about 6$ for 2 shapes/sizes

oh and with regard to heat,if the glass don't crack first before it melts,your lucky...

Dremels come with a glass engraving bit which is slow but effective at making holes.

I saw this flower vase at walmart that looked exactely like a bong except no stem, but it was really thin glass, could you still drill it?

i dunno about all these diamond bits but all i used when i made a waterfall bong out of a sobe bottle was a drill bit specially made tol drill through glass, lemme find a pic

there ya go man, you can buy those at lowes or home depot or any kind of hardware store, like others have said, be sure to run water on it, i didnt do it the whole time, i just stopped every little bit and poured water on it to cool it down, drill slow your first time, speed can be what shatters it. ive used electrical tape to strengthen it before but its not really needed, when your break through go extra slow because thats when it breaks the easiest. when i get a camera ill take some pics (if i remember)

I've made plenty of bongs. We used a glass bit and filled it with water and rested it on a towel to slow the vibrations down. Keep water running over it and keep it filled with water makes things alot easier. We once used 5 MD 20/20 bottles and connected them and made a 5 chamber bong.

Finally got a camera so here are some pics of my first experience drilling through glass. Just remember take it slow at first, if you go too fast the glass will break. When you break through and are now jsut enlarging the hole to the size you want, go slower, this is the crucial point. pour water over it every now and then to keep it cool and remember to wet the bit as well.

I'd think that all that matters is bowl material and stem material, but I'm probably wrong. If there is water in it, the lead will leach into that, and then into your lungs. thats not good. and I know this thread is long dead
