Are you using a fan to emulate the wind effect , this will strengthen stems.

what kind of ph levels are you running? hydro sounds real cool when you tell yer friends, but for a beginner i would say try a grow or 2 in soil, if you cant get a weed to grow in dirt then you might want to find a good connect. 400 watts might be on the small end, or too far from plants <stretch>, is it a grow light or security? city water has chlorine among other crap that is not in your plants best interest, don't worry it sounds like a lot to worry about, it is, but when you kill off a batch, u can try again, enjoy
People are generally lazy and hold onto currently held false beliefs. This condition is not acceptable to the ethical atheist. It is not good enough to sit comfortably with your knowledge of the Universe and look in pity at those who are still governed by lies, mythology and sensationalism. Scientific education is the only way to prevail. Only by increasing the comprehension of scientific truths can we hope to continue our progress past the Dark Ages.

as the guy above says you have to have your fundamentals such as your good quality high powered fan( i run mine all the time the light is on), good fresh air (or co2), good light reflection ect.

Also very important in my opinion when growing hyroponicaly is that you can be much more acurate investing the extra cash in a proper high acuracy PH meter and trunchon nutreint meter because especially in hard water areas you have to be very accurate in caculating the compensations of all the dead unusable salts in the water.

Super thrive and gardian angel are also very good investments for ensuring maximum stress managment for your crops!! hope that helps a bit mate?? happy growing.
