Something like this shouldn't end a friendship and if it does.. well, you have to ask yourself if it really makes that much of a difference on your life. My best friend of 13 years dropped me like a dirty diaper, for reasons.. that still baffle me. I was pretty taken back by it.. as we grew up together and nothing really "caused" the end of the friendship.

If he can't accept what you've told him, than perhaps it's time to part ways as active friends.
