I think at this point he was trying to in fact kill you untill the hand cuffs broke causing your hands to be free, and he became worried/scared of the situation turning for the worst for him and fled knowing he couldn't wound you seriously/or get what he was after, or knowing you could of got the knife and returned the favor now that it was a fair fight and you were no longer tied up.
