    a rockwool question

ok, ive always started off in ph balanced rockwool then once they get about and inch tall i remove them from the rockwool and set them in the hydroton, (im using waterfarms), has anybody or does anybody just plant the seedling in the the hydroton still in the rockwool? deep enough of course to keep the rockwool out of the light, it just seems it would drown the plant since it holds so much water, and being on a drip system, wouldnt some what dry out.

    thanks guys

roflmao!!! You don't ever remove seedling from rockwool...i.e. You plant and root in rockwool, then you take rooted rockwool plug/plant and place in netpot with hydroton...

as long as you pump fresh solution over the rockwool at consistant intervals your off times will provide enough oxygen to get to the rootzone.

sorry, but your post kills me...How did you get the seedlings out of the rockwool without killing the poor 'lil things?

You don't put the drip on top of the rockwool it needs to drip off to the side or else you are correct the rockwool will always be soaked and that is where damping off starts.

i was wondering the same thing, cause i used to use just grow rocks, which works if ur wondering. and now im using rockwool 2 inch cubes and then i put them into grow rocks, i was thinking of a way to get the roots out of the growwool but it doesnt really matter cause the roots are l.ike 1% in the wool. i was worrying about root rot cause i have srip irrigation.

of course the method will work, but don't you agree that is a little simpler and more stress free when you can just check to see if it is drying out or not, and then add more water accordingly? I agree with zandor that a drip system shouldn't be implemented on the rockwool itself because it is made precisely to hold the right amount of moisture to keep the seed and or roots alive. Next time try seeds in about 25% soaked rockwool under flourescent light and see if they dont poke out faster.
