What state is best for what? Best for low cost of living, which affects every aspect of your life? Probably one of the Midwest states. Best for the weather? Probably California, as long as you don't mind the occasional earthquake, rolling blackout, massive fire or the feds crawling around like ants. What's best for taxes and debt relief? Probably Texas. What's best for skiing? Probably Colorado. What's best if you're a writer? Probably New York.

Every state is probably best at *something*, if not several somethings. You just have to figure out what your priorities are. I like low cost of living, personally. My household brings in a tad under $100k/year. In California that'd be...okay, not bad. Middle class. Not much of it would be disposable income there, but we'd do okay. But where I live, that's really quite GOOD. In fact, that's not far from being half the price of a house in this area, whereas comparable houses in California cost half a million on up. The ideal situation would be to live in the Midwest and reap the rewards of the low cost of living, but telecommute and work for a California-based or New York-based company and make THEIR wages...but spend it where you live, where everything is much cheaper.
