I got a minute before I gotta get back to the toliet!

I bought a new digital light meter. It reads in Footcandles and lux. What kind of reading should I be getting?

I have 1000 wat Hortalux HPS. I cut a small stick to 12 Inches and I use that as a gauge to measure the exact distance away from the glass. I get a reading of 1090 more or less. That with the meter turned all the way up. Help me out here, I dont have a new bulb to compare it too. I am looking to see if my bulbs are shot. When I put them in I forgot to mark them. I have several of these damm bulbs of all differant ages so I am at a loss for knowing if its time to change them yet??
