So why in our modern society, do we keep this bullshit law prohibiting such a harmless plant?

Because the legalization of marijuana would be a economic issue, government would want to tax it and all that crap. Government would never do such a thing to legalize marijuana because then we would all simply grow it form our backyard and the goverment can't regulate it this way nor make money so therefore folks marijuana is not going to be LEGAL.
