Early diagnosis and regular checkups are great. But the key is trying to prevent that diagnosis in the first place. Lots of exercise. A balanced, high-fiber, low-fat, high quality-protein, and complex carbohydrate diet. Maintaining a normal, stable weight. Even with all those things, the dysmetabolic body types (the apple-shaped people) will tend to develop insulin resistance much sooner than others. And they have to work harder at fighting the diabetes once it comes on. They're the ones who get heart disease sooner than others, too, sadly. It's not fair, but it's a fact of life and body types.
