i smoke (cigs) and i always wondered this. im a minor (16) and i wanted to know if i can get fined or sumthin for having cigs on me, or smoking in public. me and my friends always put out our cigs if we see a cop, but do we have to? we live in connecticut if that'll help.

^^^ur so full of shit. If that was the truth then you wouldnt be ID'd to buy cig's. You have to be 18 to poses,use or buy tobacco in the US. Punishment may very from state to state but you will at least get hasseled. just my two cents

where i live (north carolina) its 18 to buy and 16 to possess im guessing the age limit is so low because NC is one of the biggest tobbaco producers in the usa how ever i dont think its 16 to smoke every where in the usa just check your local laws

When I was a kid, we hid our smokes too. I don't know what the law is where you live, but you might want to try googling it...

Well, I know for a fact here in SC that you can legally possess cigarettes underage, you just can't sell to a minor or buy them for a minor. I used to volunteer for a company around here whose job was to go to convenience stores to see if they would sell you cigarettes underage. The woman I volunteered for once mentioned that she wanted to do the same thing with alcohol, and when I asked her why they couldn't she said it was because the law is written so that minors can still possess cigarettes, meaning she wouldn't get in trouble for it. However, if a minor were to possess alcohol here, she could be fined along with the minor for underage possession. Just my two cents.

to put a end to this these are the ACTUAL laws in Connecticut:

MINIMUM AGE FOR SALE: 18
That ALSO: Prohibits purchase,possession,and/or use by minors under 18.

Penalties for first violation: None, You must sign a form

Connecticut will notify parents when their teens are caught lighting up. Anyone under age 18 who continues to violate the ban will be fined and forced to attend classes to stop smoking.

"Beginning on April 1, 1988, the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to minors under 18 is now prohibited by law in all fifty states of the United States. The legal age of purchase has been additionally raised to 19 in Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey, Utah, and Nassau and Suffolk Counties in New York, and legislation was pending as of 2004 in some other states, including California to raise the age to 19 or even to 21. In Massachusetts, parents and guardians are allowed to give cigarettes to minors, but sales to minors are prohibited"
