I had the same view on the article, with one exception. Fanaticism, of any kind, is more of a reaction/defence against threats or hopeless conditions. If you're an extremist (not of the inherited faith, but of the converted sort), then it's got everything to do with why you think the world is fucked up and it's your mission to destroy it and start from scratch. When you "unpack" that zeal it has to be rooted in something they feel they have no control over.

Anyway, I have liberal leanings but I'm also a realist. If you're blowing yourself up in a cafe on behalf of Allah, then I really don't care whether you got enough hugs, or enough macro nutrients, or play time as a kid.
