US should lead Iran by example -- Stop Enriching Uranium, Stop Weapons Program, etc.
by Stan Moore
The U.S. Government tells Iran, "Do as we say, not as we do". The U.S. proclaims that Iran is a threat to peace, while the U.S. attacks nations that have not attacked it under false pretenses. The U.S. stations its military all over the globe and has killed more people since WWII than any nation in human history.
So, wouldn't it be better for world peace and unity if the U.S. would set an example for Iran in peacemaking? Would it not be best for the U.S. to stop enriching uranium, stop building nuclear weapons of any kind, and opening our own nuclear facilities to UN inspectors? What would we lose -- can't we defend ourselves without nuclear weapons?
Iran could never defeat the U.S. with or without nuclear weapons. A nuclear terrorist attack against the U.S. could never defeat the U.S. or bring it down. The U.S.' own nuclear terrorist attack on Japan in 1945 did not destroy Japan. More Americans are killed annually by the homegrown tobacco industry than would be killed in the worst terrorist attack imaginable.
We do not even know that Iran is actually building an atomic weapon. This is conjecture and speculation, not unlike the contrived "intelligence" used to justify attack on Iraq. We do know that if Iran ever launched a nuclear attack against the U.S., the retaliatory war against Iran would effectively destroy Iran as a nation and a civilization. We know that the U.S. has the technical ability to trace sources of atomic material and could identify the source of the radiation energy used in any attack against America, just as we know that the U.S. could identify the source of the anthrax molecules that were used against Washington D.C. after 9/11/2001. (And we know that this whole issue somehow disappeared once informed scientists began to suggest that the anthrax in question had to have come from U.S. produced stockpiles of the germ).
Iran is not a real threat to America, but in the interest of world peace, it would be right and proper for the U.S. to insist that Iran follow our own example in divesting from any nuclear arms program. The U.S. can start first by opening up all its production and design facilities to UN inspection, and then beginning the serious process of de-arming itself and teaching the world how to put the atomic genie back in the bottle by eliminating the entire stockpile of nuclear arms.

Howdy gotcha,
Yer forgetting that the Free World, has 2 major enemies that need to be defended against, that being Russia and China, without our nuclear deterrent, there wouldn't be any way to stop the true colors of the commies from manifesting..like muslim-jihadists,they seek to gain world domination. China and Russia, continue to develope advanced nuclear weapons, build huge NBC bunkers and have signed a mutual-defense pact, against the US and our allies..rather than lay down the only weapons that stop the commies,we should be developing and advancing and refreshing, our nuclear weapons..especially the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator,or RNEP's for short.
We need to use RNEP's against the bunkers that usama is hiding in,but Afghanistan and Pakistan, would freak out,if we used a nuclear weapon on their soil,we should do some carpet-bombing there too,but since we ain't doing either, and given the fact that there are corrupt military and goverment forces there, protecting usama,we ain't caught him yet or killed him.
Another thing that yer forgetting about,is that Israel is our ally and they are under direct threat from Iran and Syria, also,Iran is involved in the insurgency in Iraq. If Iran attacks Israel, then Israel may have to use their nukes on em,if we lay down our nukes, then Iran will be emboldened to attack Israel,NK will be emboldened to attack SK,and Lord only knows what China and Russia would do.
You sound like one of them fellers who'd rather be a dhimini and pay a jizya tax, just so that you can stay alive. Are ya ?

I can't believe I'm agreeing with you, Torog. That article is a great example of hippie speak... we might as well hand out free granola and peace symbols while we're disarming.
I have no evidence to back up my opinion but I suspect the world was a lot safer during the cold war than it is now. M.A.D was brilliant (You kill me, I kill you). And it's based on the assumption that human beings are rational creatures.
Where I disagree with you and every neo conservative is in the assumption that Iran's leadership is irrational; fanatical, yes, but not irrational. The most important thing the west (ideally, the U.S.) can do right now is to begin a dialouge with Iran. Analysts say they have ~10 years before they can produce weapons (and that assumes that's their intent). In the meantime, there's lots of diplomatic and clandestine buttons and levers, carots and sticks, to leverage on Iran.
Most important is they have a culture that likes western stuff.

You do bring up a good point--that being we must not under-estimate Iran's leadership and think of them as being irrational..they are in fact, very rational and sober, when it comes to accomplishing their goals..it would be easy to dismiss them as nuts and therefore likely to make stupid mistakes, when in reality, they are probably gittin advice, help and material support, from russian and/or chinese, military strategists.
While Iran is supposedly '10 years' away from fielding and deploying their own nuclear weapons, that time could be drastically shortened,if someone simply sells em the nukes that they want.
You're also right, when ya point out, that there are many of the younger generations in Iran, that do want to lead a free'er and more western lifestyle. I think that we should give them and those who are a part of the resistance there(against the current leadership),a chance to overturn the fundy muslim leadership.
However,Iran's leadership has warned of dire consequences,if it's found out that we are supporting the movement to overturn them, and if we try applying sanctions against them..mcuh less,if we or Israel, bombs em back to the 7th century.
