New Room First Time (trying to do it right)
Okay so I have a room that will be 10x10x8. My goal with this setup is to produce enough bud for me and my buddies with the occasional "business deal".
So I have decided at first to do a soil grow. Money is not too much of an issue, I don't want to go overkill but I do no want to upgrade anytime soon. I am trying to grow the strongest in potency I can.
I have about 1K to build this out with, perhaps more if needed but that is what I have allocated to start with. I am building this room from scratch in the basement.
I really need help with lighting/how many plants to plant. The more bud the better, with that said and my budget how many plants should look to get going?
I also have thought about making two roomsâ?? one vegging and one budding, maybe go with 1-600w HPS for budding and 1-600w MH for vegging?
I have been doing continuous research for a while now, but it's getting near time to break down.
Tips pls

How many plants on average would yeild a 3lb harvest. I would like to have a qp a month at least in between harvest?
Am I aiming for too much?

Many different approaches.
1)Genetics, get best you can find. (heavy yeild, quick growth, good taste, suitability for indoor grow, maybe low odor) THC percent? I think indica prolly rools that. may be wrong.. lots of people like the smoke overall. Like if Diesel strain was hella strong but tasted like gas no one would smoke it.
2) Decide how many plants you will bloom veg and have cloning. If you want near monthly harvest you need good system in place.
3) If you want 3lbs your gonna need more than two six hundreds. I think the most you could pull using both of those at the same time is 9oz -1.5 lb. this would prolly increase as your skill increases. if you gave optimal nutes and care. Just look at all these other guys set up pics. I got nothin these days but I have seen some great set ups goin on.
4)find the method that works with wat you want and try to use it. SOG, hydro, sounds like your goin dirt, get a book helps a lot.
FYI if you rewire your electric to 220v you can lower your draw of power and wire up more lights(research this). Dont try this yourself...Have a certified electrician come out. TAke care of all your electric before you put anything in your room. If you decide to go that route. Just say your making a power tool shop, or you want to install a hmm...washer or dryer, big freezer below.. Indoor growing limited to efficiency and experience. Tricks for more light, flat white paint or foylon, lightrail intellidrive, pruning, placement of plants. stagger like coliseum seating. Well just my thoughts, all i can give ya from my past experience, im sure some pros will join in and help ya. Plan it, be safe, Good luck to ya.

with your budget would probably suggest a 1000 hps lamp for flowering and a 400 mh for vegging both with air cooled reflectors.
suggest you have the flowering area about 4 by 4 ft wich would give you a little over 60 watts per sq ft, you may not want to make any walls to permanent as you may want to expand the flowering room at a later time.
you do want a seperate area for veg growth and to keep any mother plants you may have so you can take clones as needed to be ready to go into the flowering room.
a cloning area wich are often started under flourecent lights in a propagation tray and can even be set on a set of shelves until roots develop then moved under the hid.
as per number of plants to start from seed probably about 6 of just one strain at first let them get mature discard males and take clones off the females and flower the clones in the flowering room in a sog style grow at about 1 plant per sq ft or 16 in a 4 by 4 ft area.
you can always add other strains and discard any mother plants you do not want to grow out again.

your not gonna yield 3 lbs per harvest with the above setup either but if you doubled the size of the flowering room and added another 1000 watt hps it would be quite possible just dont think it will fit in your budget if its 1k.

Great replies thanks! I re-read what I posted last night and well I guess it had been a long night of smoking.
I'm aiming for an average of a QP a month.
Yes I am going dirt grow. I am starting with this, then moving to hydro and then to sog or scog (one with the chickenwire).
Also I sprouted and put in soil some bagseed, about 3 of them. I'm taking this very slow and trying to learn as much as I can beforehand. I know I will make mistakes but the less the better.
Okay say I had an 8.8.8 room could I have one veg and one flowering room? If so what size would you make them for a standard soil grow? What wattage of lights would you use in each area?
Thanks

That room could technically use 5000w worth of lights at 50W's PSF, but if your looking for approx a QP a month I would think about sectioning off a 4x5 area and throw a 1000W HPS light and do another area the same and throw up a 600W MH for veg, run a 750 CFM fan on a can filter and get an oscillating fan for each grow area.
Hope this helps some, remember don't underestimate the heat.

Also, the way I am saying you would still have room in the room to have a table for cuttings, buckets of water, a little cabinet for nutes and maybe a mother plant.

just make sure you have 50 watts per sq ft in your flowering area or better 60 -70 isnt overkill and put mylar on the walls so very little light is wasted.
have good ventilation so the lights are kept cool and can be kept close to the plants even with a 1000 watt light which provides good light penetraion it does lose effectiveness when getting over 2ft away from the light wich is why sog style of grow is probably most popular and effective as you are just flowering alot of smaller plants that will probably be in the 1 to 2 foot tall range at the end of flowering.
it doesnt take much light to maintain a few mother plants and if you choose to keep strains that have short flowering periods say 70 days or less there is no reason why you cant have 5 harvest a year and have an average of 1/4 to 1/2 lb per month.

Everybody keeps mentioning sog/scrog which I have read about and have a basic understanding of should I really go this route my first time?
I really want to do a plain dirt grow just to get a feel for the plant cycle etc.
