We are losing the War on Terrorism

I was watching the news this morning when I saw a story about the Pope apologizing for his recent speech which had angered Muslims around the world. The Pope apologizing for anything is pretty big news and it made me think "why this time?". Is he a kinder, gentler Pope? Or, did it less to do with the fact that he made some imprpoer comments and more to do with just who it was that he upset?

The simpleton currently residing in the White House would have us believe we are winning the war on terror. We are killing insurgents in Iraq by the thousands, have destroyed Al Qaeda's infrastructure, and everytime we turn around we seem to be catching the #2 guy in Al Qaeda. But what Dubya's feeble mind fails to grasp is this is not a war of attrition. Even if it was we'd probably not be winning. Bush's foriegn policy will ensure Al Qaeda has a steady stream of pissed of young Muslim's ready to blow themselves up in the name of Allah. The reality is that this is a war of attitudes and beliefs. And, we are losing!

The recent worldwide sensitivity to Muslim's is proof that we are losing the war on terror. Would the Pope have apologized if he pissed off Buddhists, or Hindu's, or Mormons? My guess is no. Why not? Well, first of all most other religions/ cutures would have just responded with their version of "fuck you" and that would have been the end of it. Not the Muslims, however, who have no problem with blowing up ancient Buddhist statues, burning American (or any other country their pissed at) flags, or effigies of the Pope, but simply can't take any negativity towards their own religion. Secondly, and more importantly, I'm sure he wouldn't have to worry about too many pissed off Buddhist flying a plane into the Vatican.

It's not just the Pope's apology. There's proof everywhere that we are losing. Everytime any non-Muslims condemn cartoons of Mohamed, the terrorists have scored a victory. Everytime a British bank stops giving out piggy banks for fear they may offend the local Muslims, the terrorists have scored a victory. Everytime a school in Minnesota considers getting rid of it's art program because drawing images of people could upset the local Muslim community, the terrorists have scored a victory. And, each one of these victories is far more important in this war than any victory we may have in Iraq or Afghanistan.

It makes me wonder, "what's next?" Will all pork products soon be outlawed for fear of offending Muslims. Will my wife and daughter soon have to wear head scarves so they don't offend them. Forget low rise pants and short, belly bearing, shirts. It's burkahs for all!!

I for one, say "Fuck that!!" If the Muslims can dish it out they can take it too. Did the cartoon offend you? Too fucking bad! Deal with it! Did the Pope piss you off? So fucking what? He pisses me off too but you don't see me strapping a bomb on and walking into the closest Sunday mass. If my local bank stops giving out piggy banks I'm taking my business elsewhere. And, anytime I see an example of this new sensitivity aimed strictly at Muslims I'm going to speak out against it. I urge everyone to do the same.

Thanks for your heartfelt post, my friend, and for the sad, sad truth you stated plainly above. This concerns me more and more with each passing day: the complete obliteration of the respect and safety we, along with our allies, used to enjoy in most parts of the world. We've only made things worse, and far too few people, especially too few of those in power, seem to be ready to realize that fact. The worst thing is that nearly all westerners are tainted now by association with us, even those like us who strenuously oppose our Middle East policies.

The pope's just like many of us, I imagine. He's understandably frightened, not only as the leader of the church but also as the head of state for his "principality," which includes some big potential real estate targets for terrorists. Even though I agree in theory with the idea of just saying "If you can dish it out, then you can take it, too" to angry Muslim extremists, I personally wouldn't probably do that right now, either, even as good as it might feel.

I'm not Catholic, but the way I understand it, isn't the Pope supposed to be God's representatvie and the 'mouth piece' of God on Earth? So theologically and in theory the Christian God is apologizing to the Muslim God? Just thought at was an interesting spin to it...

I think that's an interesting spin, too! As the voice of God on earth--or more accurately, the conduit, according to their theology--I'm sure the Pope wants, as his modern predecessors have, to be a voice of international peace. I'm sure that's why he was so chagrinned to get the response he did. I figure he's also probably lamenting any potentially lost converts he might have been able to win in the Muslim world. He's also the chief marketing officer for his faith.

The passage the Pope quoted may be over 600 years old but, apparently it's still the truth.

Did they kill a nun? Seriously? I haven't read that anywhere, and it makes me sick. Please send me that link, Bong. I just hate hearing that.
