Bic produce a smaller flame, allowing you to corner the bowl better and not fully cherry it, the smaller flame also means you inhale less butane.

The cheap chinese lighters pride was referring to originally as butane (usually thin and clear) produce a huge flame in excess of an inch or so much larger than Bics. This cherrie the weed more leading to a harsher hit and more chemically taste if that helps. That's why people dont usually use Zippos for bowls, since its all just chemicals extra

Actually, the chinese ones have adjustable flames, you can make them as small(barely visible) or as large(6+ inches) as you want. Sometimes the little adjusting knob is blocked by the metal wind shield, so you might have to remove it. Probably worth the $0.2 the bic costs just to have it tuned correctly out of the box. I don't know what "cherrie" means, but there are no chemicals in a torch or chinese lighter that aren't in a bic, and unless by "harsher" you mean "hotter" (temperature-wise) I don't know what you're talking about.

No, that's not true. There is nothing special about a bic, other than a carefully tuned flame. If you think there aremajor differences between lighters after reading this thread, then you're retarded.

"Lighters

Lighters come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Ordinary cigarette lighters are adequate for smoking bud, but they're not the best. If ordinary lighters are used, it's best to make sure the flame is at least 1.5" tall. When lighting, the lighter is best held vertically, with the flame being sucked over the edge of the bowl onto the bud. This method avoids singed fingers.

If possible, a pipe lighter should be purchased. Pipe lighters emit a tall flame at a ninety-degree angle, making it easier to light a bowl. The same effect can be achieved with conventional lighters by using a lighter "holster". The only one I've seen was made out of leather and had a "belt strap" on the back. The lighter was put into the holster, and the index and middle fingers fit snugly into the belt strap (with the holster resting on *top* of the fingers). The thumb could then flick the lighter with all fingers safely away from the flame even if the lighter were held sideways to light the bowl.

Above all else, though, the most important characteristic to look for in a lighter is reliability. It's depressing to be holding a packed bong, ready for a hit, and flicking the lighter over and over without getting a flame."

well... I'm not totally sure about "regular" lighters and others... but I think that torch lighters seem too harsh and too hot for the weed. aka burning more than you could of gotten in your lungs. Either way, after reading that entry from that site, I'm buying a "pipe lighter" on ebay.
I like the idea of high-end lighter + 45~90 degree flame that simply makes it look cooler when getting high.
I'm definitely a quality over quantity guy.

Yeah, pipe lighters are nice, most (not all) of them are torch flames FYI...
Also, torch lighters are not "too harsh" or "too hot" for the weed, with a Bic or a torch it's just going to be burned bud. Torch lighters can make the pipe hotter, but that's the only existent negative effect (if you are smoking out of glass)

i always try and use bic, i dont think i wouldever use a tourch lighter just cause it would burn to much green, as for matches let the sulfer burn off for a few seconds before using them

A torch lighter doesn't burn any more green, it just burns hotter, if anything it would help you get more out of your bud. Letting the sulfur burn off matches is advisable, that stuff is nasty.

A BIC lighter is a ghetto ass butane ligther. It burns butane, just like any other non-zippo lighter, it uses a flint to ignite said butane, like most lighters, and other than that it's just a non-adjustable valve with a plastic resovoir.

A "butane lighter" is any lighter that burns butane, including BIC lighters. I don't know what you are referring to as a "butane lighter", but it popular gas station brands are Djeep, Bic, and Ronson, as well as no-name chinese ones. Expensive brands of butane lighters (some are in excess of $100) work in the same way, but usually use a piezoelectric lighter to ignite the butane. A piezoelectric lighter makes a small spark by compressing a quartz crystal (I honestly don't know exactly how that works).

A "jet" or "torch" lighter is a lighter that mixes butane with air before ignition, make a much hotter flame. Sometime manufactureres put a small piece of metal at the top to make a colored flame, such as copper for a green flame. These tend to be more effecient, but they can also bring out harmful chemicals in metals.

A zippo is, well, we all know what a zippo is.

I use the automatic ones cuz i hate flickin them on and off when ur in the middle of takin a hit, especially if it doesn't light, and mine has a feature whether you want a tall or small flame, of course i use a tall flame, pretty nice i guess

Wow, what a discussion about lighters. I never knew people got that upset at talking about this.

I use a BIC when I'm inside, but if it's windy outside, I use by torch flame. There is nothing more than I hate trying to light up when the wind is blowing, so a wind resistant flame, works like a charm.

BICS- i used to use djeeps because you could ajust the flame but the flint kept shooting out from under the spinny thing at the worst time, so i switched to bics. plus i like the shiney metal on the top, i have a one-hit that looks like a cig, and you can never tell when its cherried when your hitting, so i jsut use the reflection in my bic.

at one point, i had a torch lighter (it was actually a pipe lighter, kinda sweet. the flame was like a mini blowtorch) and i would just hold the flame a few cm's above the bud and it would burn it really nicely, i wanna try that again

thats kinda how i am. doesnt have to be a bic brand specifically(although it always is), but it has to be the same design or whatever you wanna call it.
