What determines a plants sex ?

When does it actually happen ? What controls it to become a male or a female ? Im sure its a lot different than human birth but what actually causes a plant to become a male or a female ? is it just a luck of the draw ? Ive always wondered this. Especially now since I have a lot of equipment headed my way including the seeds. I just dont want a male, I want a female. Would planting 2 plants increase my chances of a female ? Thanks.

think about this. Say the chance is 50/50
if you plant one seed, you have a 50% chance of a fem.
if you plant two seeds you still have a 1/4 chance of getting two males
but it's also 1/4 chance of getting two fems

what i'm saying is that two seeds doesn’t guarantee anything

Yes, planting 2 seeds increase your chances of getting a female plant; the same way that if you have 2 bullets in a 357 revolver playing russian roulette, you might just kill yourself. But harris7 is also right, sometimes you get 2 males and sometimes you get lucky and get 2 females. But there is a catch, you can also buy female seeds online, but even those are not always true, maybe about 70% chance of female. Sometimes those seeds herm too. If you have the space, just plant about 5 seeds and 1 has to be female. With that one female plant that you get you can learn how to clone. Use the female plant as a mother plant and have a clone fiesta. those clone will all be female 99.9% (nothing is 100%) :thumbsup: ...

environment plays a crucial role in sex determination, males develop under less-than-perfect conditions, being the more stress-tolerant of the sexes ... I have had amazing luck throughout my many grows, having only sprouted two males in many years ... I would not waste money on 'feminized' seeds, myself ... my last few grows, I have purposely stressed some plants, in an attempt to come up with a male, for fertilization ... I'm tired of spending money on quality seeds, want to produce my own ... contrary to common belief, when a plant starts making seeds, it does NOT hurt the potency of the mother plant, it only stops the overall growth process (no harm done, since the plant is finished, anyway, for my purposes) ... :smokin:

Sex of the plant is determined at the RNA level of the plant not the DNA.

Image reaper is correct, the environment is key to growing female plants over male plants. But you can tilt the chance if your favor with proper control and care.

Somewhere between the 3rd and 4th week of vegetation is when the plant determines it's sex if you are interested.

Environmental factors:
color of light
humidity
moisture in seedbed
temperature
composition of soil

You can look this stuff up in any good growing book for specifics, like what the best ranges are to encourage female sex expression.
