when should topping be done, and about lights, will mv blubs work for flower?
    I have a 2x6x5 foot high space with 3 mv 175 watt, and a flourecent, 2 bulb 40w daylight.

What is a mv 175 light? Is that mercury vapor? If it is mercury vapor, my understanding is that is not a good light spectrum for growing at all. You'll do much better with a single 250w or 400w HID metal halide (for veg) or HPS (for flowering) light. I've even seen great results here from people just using a handful of cfl's.

As to your current setup, I'm no expert but would have to say, no, that's not enough light.

my 3 mercury vapor lights are a form of hid lighting, highly used before metal halide came around. from what i've read they are excellent for the veg state but wrong spctrum for flower as they tend to be too blue. is that true and where can i find a 400w hps system? i havent seen them in any hardware stores
due to circumstances i may have to use my current light set up for flower. any ideas as to what i can expect or tips to improve with out spending a fortune?

yep you could do that. That way, the government would be sort of sponsoring your grow!

Anyway, I guess you can grow them with MV but here is a link that is full of information about light and growing weed.

Hope it works out for you. Post some pics so we can share in your grow.
