Do you not think though that it would've been better to approach the issue with him rather than just assume that he wouldn't care?

What if he threw you out..called the police on you? The fact that his only concern was the temperature is very unique. I'm not talking to or about you in specific. I'm generalizing.. and in general, if you grow in someones house without their knowledge.. they're not going to be happy when they find out.
It's good that you're being mildly responsible by taking precautions and the fact of the matter still remains that it is simply a plant. But an illegal plant (as much as we wish it wasn't it still is) the point i'm trying to get across here is that when you live in someones house the owner of that house is responsible for what goes on...it's not a matter of "being responsible" it's a matter of law. Respect the law by respecting the property and wishes of others, that's all.
