Well you definitely don't need to be running that light for germination, and from what I've read here you would be better off with some CFLs or MH instead of the HPS until you start flowering.

I'm gonna start growing some bud and thought I'd post my set-up and see what kind of advice you guys could offer. I planted my germinated seeds (pics below) today so this is day 1. They're easy buds from femaleseeds.nl and they seem good for a first grow because of the shorter yield time. I got a 400 watt HPS and, as you can see. it's in a spare wardrobe.
