Everything I have read and heard from growers says that mixing the two types of lighting is probably the best. I also believe that having lights below the canopy will help growth. But for the floro you might try a Compact Flourescent light like this one, http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=CFSD110 I have this particular model, and it is great lots of light, and almost no heat. The bulb I have in mine is good for 14,500 lumens. I keep it like 8cm (3.5") from the tops of plants (even seedlings).
I need to think of something clever to put here...

I don't see why not??? I'm am doing that as well, untill i can get ahold of a good 400 hps lamp. Untill then i'm using the flouro in the bathroom and a little flouro along side so as to get the light in between. Its doing great in my bathroom and i make sure it doesn't get to much humidity too! Just watch that it isn't to hot for the plant. I have 2 but one is almost ready for the hps lamp...yikes need to get my lamp soon!!!..lol

better to use a metal halide in veg and a hps in flower, maybe a 250 watt would have been better in your space if the 400watts causin temps of 106f.
just my thoughts m8,good luck with the grow

Ive used about a gallon of water in 8 days for these three small plants.. reason being because they were dry as hell everytime I watered.. must been the light... but do you think that was too much?

have they sprouted yet? doesn't look so from your pics. in that case you might want to leave the light off until then, its not good for seedlings to go through stress like that from the light.
