Why do you smoke Cannabis?
Hi there,
I'm new to this forum, but used to have the same name over on OG before it was taken offline. I have grown many crops of Cannabis both indoors and out, and used to be a regular smoker.
Recently, I have quit smoking. It has really opened my eyes. I have realized how much I abused this plant, and did not give it the respect it deserves. I was smoking at least once a day, for a quite some time. It was not causing me to be a loser, I was in school, had a job, girlfriend, my own place where I was paying all my own bills. So, my smoking was not causing me to be a waste of space. I have a crop going this year of Mango Haze X White Widow, a limited edition run from Shantibaba, my favorite breeder.
This question keeps popping up in my head now that I am not smoking anymore. Why was I smoking Cannabis? I had a couple of answers, and none of them were justified. It was making me content with doing things not to my full potential. Basically, if I had nothing in particular to do, my answer was always blaze some chronic and go from there. I have been so productive since I quit smoking that it's rather quite comical, and I still can't understand why I was smoking all the time. Like many people, I was living in a culture whose basic tenets I did not agree with, and it would seem that Cannabis was my answer for coping with myself when I was doing things that I knew better not to. If you have ever seen some of the scientific research on Cannabis use, one of the effects is termed A-Motivational Syndrome, a loss of motivation and ambition. Basically, smoking Cannabis makes you content with whatever you are doing, even if it is sitting on the couch doing nothing. I have a friend who doesn't smoke, but lately he has been asking me to get him some, and before I would have happily obliged him, but now I am very wary to do so. I tell him that there is really no use for it, except in spiritual rituals, because it will make you think that ordinary thoughts are more profound than they really are, which can be a dangerous thing, resulting in arrogance, pride, and all that those entail.
My roommates still smoke chronic every day, and when I am around them they still pass me the joint and tell me to hit it. What's the point? I'm perfectly fine the way I am, and a basic tenet of Buddhism is to look over the choice you have to make, if it is good for you, do it, if it will not help you, don't do it. The effects of Cannabis on the mind and the attitude of a smoker are so subtle that it took me a long time to realize that the way I was using it was not good for me. I really don't have any idea why I was smoking.
I'm still trying to solve this question. So my question to people who read this is:
