smart people that know about the world please read
Invevitably the world will end one day, and with each decade that passes, the path to that end accellerates as we (collectively) continue to knacker our environment in acheiving short term profits. The justification, constantly, for not changing our approach, is the increased cost, the inability to compete in markets dominated by the exploitation of 3rd world countries. America refused to conform to the Kyoto protocol citing the impact on America's economy as the key reason - "Do you have any idea of the cost of the Kyoto protocol?" - a short term, egotistic view and America are not alone.
The general view seems to be - I must make profit, f*ck the future beyond my lifetime.
The world is driven by the financial markets, we outsource our skilled labour to India and other third world locations in the name of profit, and ignore the fact that more and more people are losing work and dropping into lower levels of poverty in our western countries. The additional impact of that, is that we are then forced (because we have less money) to buy cheap, poor quality products, whose manufacturing techniques are often key contributors to pollution and the knackered environment.
Before this turns into an Essay, there is some encouragement - the Ozone layer is beginning to heal itself - 2 decades later than anticipated, but it is happenning. Perhaps it will be enough to decrease the Global Warming effect, prevent further erosion of our ice-packs, and prevent huge quantities of fresh water from pouring into the sea, disturbing the key currents essential for habital climates around the world (including places like the UK).
More than this, many western countries are now adopting recyclying in a more effective way - but the Governments will apply increased taxation and charges to encourage us to not "throw so much away" - this is self defeating as this pushes us to (as mentioned above), buy more cheap products, made in locations exempt from the Kyoto protocol, and manufactured in a manner which is not "environmentally friendly". But - recycling is definately a step in the right direction, and is a way we can all help a little.
We are becoming wiser - finally we are learning that leaving electronic devices in stand-by and not turning them off is a contributor to our increased electric bills and global warming... more and more of us a re remembering to turn our TV's off instead of just to standby. If one person does it, the effect is minimal, if 50 million households do it (UK population), the effect is significant..... so do your part too...
Man ... going to get off my soapbox now ... you might have noticed this is one of my pet subjects.... I am not some "Green Avenger", but I do love this world, the people in it, the music, the love, the green.... I don't want to be part of the generation that knew we were f*cking it up, and did nothing!
Unfuck the World!
