Nothing lasts forever. A few billion years, sure, I could see the Earth lasting that long, but it's not going to do so well after the Andromeda Galaxy crashes into our galaxy and our Sun becomes so large that its diameter extends past the orbit of Mars.

I try not to worry too much about what I cannot control,but I am definately of the opinion that the human race will use the hell out of the Earth and all resources before it's all over.
As pessimistic as it sounds,we are parasites and the Earth is the host.We are the only animal that has WANTS,not just NEEDS.

how the hell can anybody say "the world will definately be around for billions more years blah blah blah" when we all know one wrong move could spark a superpower into dawning the age of nuclear and chemical warfare on a global scale

That big asteroid isn't going to hit us. They say now that it'll come within 100,000 miles though, which is pretty close. But pretty close is far enough. It isn't big enough to do that much damage anyway, even if it did hit. Localized damage, maybe a little more if it hit water.

Incidentally, rocks that hit water are far more dangerous to the human race than those that hit land, oddly enough. A big rock hitting land might wipe out a state-sized area. A big rock hitting water would vaporize monumental amounts of water and cover the earth with clouds for years, cause tsunamis and tidal waves and wipe out cities along whatever coasts are near. For a good fictional account of a big rock hitting the earth, and the aftermath, I recommend 'Lucifer's Hammer' (by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle). Great book!
