how do you take your hits?

i cleared a 4 foot acryllic a few weeks ago it was sick. i milked it, took about 1/4 of a hit in, pulled it, inhaled it ALL, couldnt breathe in any more and got BLASTED with a headrush too it was sick

but usually out of my pipe i take a big hit, then take my mouth away and inhale just air to circulate it in my lungs

Im just wondering wether it be pipes/joints/bongs/blunts etc. How do you take "big hits" Do you inhale smoke slowly, but until you cant breathe anymore? or do you inhale smoke fast until you cant breath anymore? or what? help THANKS!
