I tried
Should hit you in 45 mins to 2 hours, kinda creeps up on you, until you go, wow, I'm pretty damn stoned! If you didn't notice anything, then you probably didn't use enough cannabis, the quality was too low, it wasn't cooked properly, or you didn't eat enough.
I just tried my first cooking experiment yesterday, made 5.5 cups of canna-oil, using 2.5 ounces of small but high quality buds. I cooked it in a crockpot for 7 hours or so, then strained out the plant matter. I used half a cup to make a pan of brownies, and they came out great! I had two last night and got quite wasted for about 6 hours. This morning I tried 1 brownie and I was pleasantly but not immensely stoned for about 4 hours. And 5 minutes ago I ate 2.5 brownies, and I probably won't be able to move in about 90 minutes.
I think it's mainly about figuring out what's a reasonable dosage, depending on what you're cooking and how much cannabis you use to make your butter or oil. It seems to take about as much pot to get stoned when you eat it as it does if you smoke it, but it lasts much longer. Like, if you use an eighth of decent stuff to make 16 cookies, then you'd probably need to eat several cookies, at least two, maybe 3 or 4.
