How about a bong? Maybe the cool smoke would be less irritating to the throat?
I have a Vapor Genie - you don't have to make it "hot" to get hits. Just keep the flame light, and not way down in the upper bowl that contains the ceramic element. Just inhale gently, and stir the pot around after a hit, then repeat. There should NOT be "smoke" coming from it into your mouth, like a conventional pipe or joint. The high is not as physical, either, but more cerebral. I actually prefer it. It takes some practice to perfect smoking this way, but it's worth the effort. I'm sure that electric vaporizers are similar, and probably better.
