Most generators are mounted 15-20" from the celing and about the same from the wall too. The pilot light will not be a problem in the dark cycle. Most of the pilot lights are inside the system and you don't see them anyway. Plus they don't produce lumens so no effect on the plant from the glow.

If you do use a generator then what are you going to use as your controler?
