For Thompson's terminology, I don't think that most of these words match the drugs he was referring to in the story. By "downers" he was probably talking about barbiturates (Seconal, etc.), or Chlorpromazine (anti-psychotics like Thorazine, etc.) which he'd have been more likely to have than benzodiazepine products, which are comparatively weak. The only one on the list I'd agree with is "uppers" for amphetamines.
