I have a cat.

I like cats because they are indpendant animals. All you have to do is feed them, and change their litter box, they take care of the rest. They are fun to play with and pick on, and at other times, they are calm and come and sit on your lap to keep you warm. They are playful animals, but they are also loving animals that are nice to pet.

Dogs, I have to walk them, take them to the bathroom, play with them, etc. Cats, can play by themselves or with you. Dogs need constant attention. I work all day and I'm tired when I come home at night. If I want kids, then I'll have kids, but I'm not going to have a dog that controls my life with his walking and play time.

That's just me though.
