Weeklong raids net 23,000 pot plants
By The Willits News staff

Marijuana raiders seized almost 23,000 plants during weeklong raids on private, tribal and federal lands in Round Valley and the surrounding hills.

The raids, which took place between August 14 and 18, were conducted by the County of Mendocino Marijuana Eradication Team (COMMET), sheriff's department detectives, members of the county's Major Crimes Task Force and state Camp Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) agents.

The plants, seized from 34 garden sites, weighed 16,500 pounds, says COMMET Sgt. Rusty Noe.

On August 15 some 4,000 plants were eradicated in Round Valley's Big Bend and Summit Valley areas. Another 500 plants were seized in the Henderson Lane/Refuse Road area, and officers arrested three people on suspicion of violating U.S. immigration laws.

Several suspects have been identified in connecting with the gardens, Noe said, and cultivation and weapons charges have been filed with the district attorney's office.

Twenty-nine guns were confiscated during the raids.

So far this year, raiders have seized 181,370 plants from 170 gardens, and that's a record, Noe says.

COMMET has raided several 10,000-plus plant gardens, he adds, including a 30,000-plant seizure in the Leggett area August 10 and 11.
