Weeklong raids net 23,000 pot plants
    By The Willits News staff

Marijuana raiders seized almost 23,000 plants during weeklong raids on private, tribal and federal lands in Round Valley and the surrounding hills.

The raids, which took place between August 14 and 18, were conducted by the County of Mendocino Marijuana Eradication Team (COMMET), sheriff's department detectives, members of the county's Major Crimes Task Force and state Camp Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) agents.

The plants, seized from 34 garden sites, weighed 16,500 pounds, says COMMET Sgt. Rusty Noe.

On August 15 some 4,000 plants were eradicated in Round Valley's Big Bend and Summit Valley areas. Another 500 plants were seized in the Henderson Lane/Refuse Road area, and officers arrested three people on suspicion of violating U.S. immigration laws.

Several suspects have been identified in connecting with the gardens, Noe said, and cultivation and weapons charges have been filed with the district attorney's office.

Twenty-nine guns were confiscated during the raids.

So far this year, raiders have seized 181,370 plants from 170 gardens, and that's a record, Noe says.

COMMET has raided several 10,000-plus plant gardens, he adds, including a 30,000-plant seizure in the Leggett area August 10 and 11.

MARIJUANA GARDEN -- Deputies from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office eradicated a 975-plant illegal marijuana garden on ranch land in the Eagle Rock area of Low Gap Road.

The landowner alerted the Sheriff's Office after he found a black-plastic waterline running across the roadway on his property and followed it until he heard voices.

A search of property by sheriff's deputies found five illegal growing sites being watered by a small pond dug into the hillside. The plants were between one-foot and four-feet tall.

No suspects were located in any of the gardens, and no arrests have been made.

    Journal
The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office made two additional arrests Wednesday in its investigation into illegal marijuana gardens in the Round Valley area.

While serving a search warrant in the 78000 block of Road 343, officers found a marijuana garden. MCSO Capt. Kurt Smallcomb said interviews with the suspects indicated the garden was being operated for profit.

Deputies arrested Raymond Howard Lawrence, 48, of Redwood Valley, and William Ralph Emery, 64, of Covelo at the scene. Lawrence was arrested on suspicion of planting and cultivating marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a controlled substance and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Emery was arrested on suspicion of planting and cultivating marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale.

Smallcomb said the two men were running the garden.

Deputies also served search warrants on a garden in the 87000 block of Road 343. Between the two gardens, deputies seized and destroyed a total of 7,500 marijuana plants.

On Tuesday, sheriff's deputies arrested Rafael Alexander Nunes, 27, and Airton Costa Junior, 41, both of Covelo, and Edgar Quinillo, 18, of San

Rafael, on suspicion of cultivating marijuana with intent to sell and entering the United States illegally.

The three were allegedly working in illegal marijuana gardens in the 76000 block of Henderson Lane and the 22000 block of Refuse Road. Sheriff's deputies also eradicated 4,500 marijuana plants in three gardens in the area.

Smallcomb said the Sheriff's Office doesn't believe the two men arrested Wednesday are connected with the larger gardens found in Round Valley on Tuesday, where Nunes, Costa and Quinillo were arrested.

The Sheriff's Office has been working with state and federal law enforcement in this effort, and with officers from the state Campaign Against Marijuana Planting. More arrests are expected.

Separated from their native soil and then burned...They're stealing our carbon dioxide..burn them! WTF is wrong with our government? They're not helping us by using OUR money to destroy organic plants.
