Best way to use a one-hitter is to pack it with a couple of nugs. Don't break it up too much or it can get sucked through the hole easily when you toke. If you are going to use a bat regularly then I recommend trimming a screen to fit snuggly in the "business" end.

Wow, I haven't used a dug-out in years. IMO, the ultimately way to take a sneaky toke. I typically broke up my herb by hand and pack it in. I used a dremel to (a strong knife works just as well) to but little 'notches' in the 'business end' of the bat. This way, all I had to down was push down and twist a little and the herb would loosen and get packed into the bat.
You can probably find larget bats that are more like 2 or 3 hits. However, they may not fit into the dugout you currently have.
