Authorities believe a man arrested in Denver is responsible for at least 10 murders in Mexico, and he could be connected to hundreds more. 9NEWS at 5 p.m. August 18, 2006.

U.S. officials say Edward Alvarez Cruz will be turned over the Mexican authorities Friday.

The U.S. ambassador to Mexico says the arrest is a "major break" in the investigation of a string of murders in a city just across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Authorities believe Cruz is part of a gang of men who raped and killed 10 women between 1993 and 2003.

However, they believe Cruz's arrest will also help solve the murders of hundreds of other women.

The bodies of many of the women were found in the desert near the city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Since 1993, 370 women, mostly poor, have been kidnapped on their way to work or school and have never been seen again. The victims were raped, strangled and tortured.
