Starting a small business

So for the past few years I always have people coming to me for computer related help and those people referring me to new people. From setting up networks, to configuring, to building new computers from scratch. They always pay pretty well but I have always just viewed it as a side job hobby type of thing. Recently I set up a network for a buddies relatives small business and after completing it I had my friend and his relative comment on how I should start up my own side business doing just this very thing.

Now what I want to know is if there is any advantage to creating a small business instead of just doing it on the side here and there? What do I have to do to accomplish this? Where do I start?

Some input from similar business owners would be awesome....

Certainly there is an advantage. You could negociate contracts with companies to do help desk support.

There's a lot of competition, but if you have the persistance, it can be accomplished.

I would start out getting certification for your skills, and start talking to small businesses, write up a proposal for your services. If you are willing to face some uncertainty, you should go for it. High-risk, high-reward.

Or you could simply get a job that needs those skills. :P

Running your own Biz is gonna require a few things...70-80 hours a week,some captial,the dertermination to give it all you have got and the willingness and understanding that it may fail try as you may. How commited are you?
From someone who ran a computer sales and repair shop for 7 1/2 years, its worth it! Nothing is as satisifing as being your own boss,but it takes TWICE the work as does working for someone else!

Your own business would require you to acquire a lisense and to start paying taxes on your work.

a real business has nice prestige qualities to it, but you could probably make more money doing it untaxed on the side.

Yeah I dont have the time or patience for that right now. I hate paying taxes as well, my current job is under the table pay. Looks like its gonna just be a side job for now....
