My name is Dave, and I am a law student at the University of Ottawa.

In order to pay my student loans off, I recently started a business where we represent people on a variety of provincial and criminal offences in the province of Ontario.

Oh ... in case anybody is wondering:

We take cases in the province of Ontario, Canada and a few other provinces.

These provinces allow representation by non-lawyer-agents like us!

Dynamic, do you non-lawyer-agents/students have to pass the Canadian version of the bar exam before you can represent clients in these types of cases? Do you have any special pre-degree certification that allows you to practice in this manner, like, for instance, a paralegal certification?

Just curious about how that works in relation to our training/court-admittance procedures here in America. . . .

Basically, to make a long story short, only lawyers can do legal duties "except where otherwise provided by law". Certain laws, regarding people charged with offences, (i.e. the Criminal Code of Canada) have a provision for representation by "agent".

Caselaw has determined that there are no requirements for an agent provided the judge doesnt find the agent to be breaking any rules (i.e. perjury) that a lawyer cannot break, or provided the judge doesnt find the person incompetent.

So in short there are no regulations other than that of business practices and contracts.

FYI, Agents are restricted - by law - to small cases i.e. simple possession.

Hey Weedmaster:
I'm probably somewhere in the middle. I'm a student and I do this business for my livelihood to pay the bills.

But on the other hand, I always try to work out a good deal. For example, my most recent pot case, I represented a guy for about 25% the cost of a lawyer.

Not to mention, I got the guy off with no criminal record, and no fine :dance:
