I think the song.
I think he was just singin' about the great bud he got that he affectionately named purple haze.
So then dealers everywhere claimed their purple buds are purple haze and thus godly.

Ahhh, another Purple Haze thread
Here's the facts:
-Purple Haze was first used as a drug reference in the late 60's as the name of a type of acid going around at the time.
-Jimi Hendrix claimed that the song "Purple Haze" had nothing to do with drugs but was a reference to a dream he had or about the feeling he had about a certain girl. Still...Jimi did do a lot of acid so who knows.
-In the 70's there was a strain of weed called Purple Haze. Apparently it wasn't very good and the strain died out due to lack of interest.
-Some strains of weed can be made to "go purple" by exposing them to colder temps. Some strains are naturally purple.
-A few purple strains, like Grandaddy Purple and Purple Erkal(pic attached), are among the most potent strains being grown today. I have smoked for 25 years and the most potent I've had by far was Purple Erkal, way more potent than White Widow, Sour Diesel, or other well known potent strains. Like green weed, however, there are good purple strains and bad purple strains. The color purple does not neccessarily indicate great weed.
-There is a strain currently being sold in many of the San Francisco cannabis clubs called "Purple Haze". So, it certainly does exist. It is a crossbreed of several other strains and certainly not the original Purple Haze grown in the '70's. Incidentally, it is not as potent as some other purple strains being sold.
-My bet would be that 99% of what is being sold on the street as "Purple Haze" is just some random purple strain that the dealer gives a fancy name to in order to get a better price. The fact that so much of what is being sold as "Purple Haze" really isn't has probably given rise to the "Purple Haze doesn't exist" theory.

I belive it was once a strain, although it died out and now only crosses remain, and ansestors, but not the original.

In the case of Purple Haze, as I pointed out before, it is available in many of San Francisco's cannabis clubs. These clubs have many strains available at any given time and really have nothing to gain by calling anything in particular a name just to raise the price. If they are all getting the same weed from the same crossbreed does it make it a legit strain? Or should the fact that there was a Purple Haze in the past, which no longer exist, invalidate the naming of a new cross as Purple Haze?
Just something to think about. What do others think?

The best breeding experiment I've ever conducted was an attempt at the making a purple haze (or what I thought it would be), I took DJ Short's Flo (female) and Soma's Amnesia Haze(male) and came out with a more "lavendar" haze with an immediate and strong head high with a balanced high creeping in 10 mins later that lasts for hours(2-3). The clones didn't make a vacation I took to Hawaii and the strain was lost. Whether the myth exists or not, well that's not important, what's important is that you get high everyday!
