How close should I get?

I've had my plant, which is about 11 1/2''- 12'', 18 inches away from my light. My light is a 400w Agrosun Gold Metal Halide. My friend who I purchased the light from told me that 18" is far away for such low watts, and that 18" was for a 1000w system. What shouuld I do?

you have a nice light... i would say it doesnt matter and just put it where u feel most comfy...

make sure you take temp readings tho... wherever you decide to put it.

Move light as close as possible without burning plant. Ideally it is an air cooled hood, or you can use fans to keep the air flowing between your light and plant. Use the back of your hand test. If the back of your hand burns when at height of plant, then its too close. The idea is to get light as close as possible, but keeping the heat from harming your plant. Fans and ventilation are your ticket to remedy that.

Might want to consider getting a HPS conversion bulb for the flowering stage. Just a thought.

Yeah, as it was said up there, it doesnt matter what so ever, as long as the light isnt burning your plants you can have it as close as you like.

I'd also recommend a HPS conversion bulb, the yeild will be much higher.
