Landis Says He'll Prove His Innocence
By PAUL HAVEN, Associated Press Writer
MADRID, Spain - Sounding more defiant than the day before, eyes flashing and voice steady, Floyd Landis looked into the cameras Friday and said he would prove he "deserved to win" the Tour de France. In his first public appearance since a urine test showing a testosterone imbalance cast his title into doubt, the American said his body's natural metabolism _ not doping of any kind _ caused the result, and that he would soon have the test results to prove it.
"We will explain to the world why this is not a doping case but a natural occurrence," Landis said from the Spanish capital.
The day before, in a teleconference from a location in Europe he did not disclose, Landis said he didn't cheat, but had no idea what might have caused the result on the Tour's 17th stage, where he staked his stirring comeback in the Alps.
During that Thursday call, Landis sounded downcast and heartbroken, saying he expected to clear his name but never his reputation. His demeanor was decidedly more fiery Friday, when he sat before a buzzing news conference and lashed out at the media for characterizing his plight as a drug scandal.
"I would like to make absolutely clear that I am not in any doping process," said Landis, wearing a baseball cap turned backward and a white shirt with the name of his Phonak team.
At least he's not "categorically denying" it...graymatter Reviewed by graymatter on . Landis Doping? I wonder about a thing though. If its true hid body produces that high levels
of testosterone why wasnt that know before? It is not unnatrual and more 'pilots' have it. They are tested every course, and suddenly his level of testosterone changes, after the most amazing tour de france course I have heard about.
Beeing wasted one day, and beeing an absolute superman the next day. Winning the tour de France with one super/amazing day is currious, and when a few days later it turns out your body was doped, it seems less curious to me...

and wotan doping isnt over night, it takes a while and has to be linked with workouts. just taking a steroid wont give u an immediate boost usually
in riding there is definately a mental wall and floyd hit that. ive seen all great riders do it. i remember yan ulrich would allways perform far worse than i believe he could

Good question... I wouldn't be surprised. When you think about it you'd have to be pretty stupid or arrogant to juice up, kick ass, and then not expect to get tested.

I'm from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and it's pretty cool around here. We all support him and even people who really don't care about sports whatsoever (like me) still get into Floyd's victory. Last week I drove by his parents home in Farmersville (just a few miles from my house). There were signs in people's yards. Floyd Landis and I had the same 4th grade teacher at Brownstown Elementary School, Mrs. Dell. (As a kid I lived in Brownstown for 4 years, right next to Floyd's Farmersville.)
I live in Ephrata, where Floyd bought his first bike. In my mind, Floyd's the champ. If I ever have a son I think I'll name him Floyd, (not just for him but for Pink Floyd).
Floyd's ancestors were hemp farmers here in Lancaster County. His ancestors names appear in my book about the great Pennsylvania hemp industry, Hempstone Heritage.
Wow! I'm starting to make some connections here in my mind...
