If you know how a carbon filter is constructed and works - just substitute the crystal type kitty litter for the carbon. It is way cheaper, and on my small scale setup, works as good as, or better than carbon. I use Fresh Step Crystals. (lol sounds like a commercial)

And the carbon in a carbon filter is Activated Charcoal - like is used in fish filters. Its granulated small pieces of (usually) burnt coconut husk.

Carbon Fiber is a fiberglass-like material that is stronger and weighs less. Im sure you may have seen a hood or a wing on a car thats made of Carbon Fiber - Kind of a black/brown 3-D type material
