You would think that impersonating a salesperson for fake labour in exchange for money would be against the law, even for them. I do believe any officer needs a search warrant to snoop around. Even saying if they're just a saleperson.
I'm not entirely sure though. I'm sure it has happened though.

Stop calling him stupid and paranoid. Every person has the right to ask a question or feel a certain way when it comes to their freedom if you ask me.

I d'no how yall do it in Canada but in the U.S., that would usually mean 1 of a couple things:
1. You were robbed.
2. You's about to get robbed.
3. Your place was just bugged.
That's usually the case when unmarked vehicles come to do things in your home out of nowhere. Do you rent? Because then it's completely possible that your landlord requested someone visit. Do all your research first before making any rash moves.

Crude.... NEVER....one more time NEVER let anybody in your house esp. if you are alone
ONE more...NEVER... what are you thinking?
Please dont let people in..... look in the peep hole and tell them you are not interested.
If you call a plumber... you make sure he has a truck with logos.... matching uniform.....
If you even feel wierd about it call the POLICE.....
Thats the advice i would give my daughter..........

Depending on the kind neighborhood you're in, I'd agree with Big Calhoun and be careful.
When we were selling our old house in the semi-ghetto, we had a cop come up to our house. He just knocked on the door and asked if we were having trouble selling the place, how we liked the neighborhood, he claimed that he thought the house was empty for the past two years. Der... no, we were living there the past two years... it was obvious he was just trying to snoop, making sure someone actually lived there while it was on the market and that it wasn't a grow house cover or something. Needless to say, he did not come in, and he barely got to see inside... which is a good thing, because a pipe was on the coffee table.
