Bush Holds Veto Pen Over Stem Cell Bill

WASHINGTON Jul 19, 2006 (AP)â?? Pleadings from celebrities, a former first lady and fellow Republicans did not move President Bush from his determination to reject, with the first veto of his presidency, a bill expanding federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

Nor was Bush swayed by two days of emotional debate in Congress, punctuated by stories of personal and family suffering, that plunked lawmakers into the intersection of politics, morality and science.

"The president believes strongly that for the purpose of research, it's inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many people consider murder. He's one of them," spokesman Tony Snow said.

Strong majorities in the House and Senate joined sentiments with most Americans and passed a bill that lifts restriction currently limiting federally funded research to stem cell lines created before Aug. 9, 2001.

But neither the House nor the Senate mustered the two-thirds vote necessary to beat a determined president, although lawmakers planned to try almost as soon as the president vetoes the bill.

That veto was expected as early as Wednesday.

Something I'm sure will pass through in "08". WAY to many benifits to let slide away.

Someone...please...anyone...tell me why these sort of society changing opportunities are not voted on by the people?

I didn't vote for so and sos representitive...thus, I'm not being represented in this matter.

This sort of veto, and lack of balls by the halls of Congress and the Senate to reverse the veto is seriously fukn aggrivating!

Its as if the only way for the people to truly be represented is quit the jobs, march on the nation's capitol...and whip out a French Revolution era guillotine in order to get those elected officials to begin doing wtf they were elected to do...represent their constituents...NOT their own personal beliefs!!!

    BAH!!!

Because our government does not practice democracy in any meaningful sense. The vast majority of decisions are made by bureaucrats or at best elected representatives who work in their own self-interests. It is naïve to think that elected representatives will always do what the people want when there is no requirement that they be held accountable for enforcing positions that the populace disagrees with.

Governments like power; they need power. If every decision was made by the people as a whole, there would be no need for power or government; people could manage their own lives, and make decisions on their own. In order for a government to survive, it needs to be able to give orders and have people follow them. If the government has the power to ban things, by golly it will start banning things, because that's what governments are made for—restricting freedoms, imposing authority and writing rules. If the government has nothing else to do or needs to distract people from other matters, it will start to come up with new rules for people to follow, based on the interests of its leaders. The legislators have to do something or else it looks like they're not doing anything productive (which they aren't!). With so many prominent Christian wackos in our government, it's no surprise that this religion-based stem cell research ban would make the top priorities.
