It's kind of nasty stuff to get rid of. If I had to choose between media, #1 would be hydroton, #2 coco coir, and #3 rockwool. Used to work at a commercial greenhouse using rockwool, that shit dries, powders, gets in your lungs, you'd think you were dying.

Better yet, fucking DHL leaves the big, UNWRAPPED sacks of rocks on my steps instead of on the porch where it's hidden from view. Nice thing to come home to. I practically had a heart attack. Yeah, put it in a big sturdy rubbermaid. Agitate it with your hands. Use a strainer to scoop roots that float up. Add peroxide. Let it soak overnight. Dump and refill, let it soak again with just water.
