homemade bong question

hey n00b question
ok the first time i smoked out of a bong was about a month ago.. i also smoked out of a homemade bong about a week ago. i'm making my own, and i was wondering if the piece is supposed to be under the water and how deep under the water? sorry im new to bongs

Underthe water so when you suck and light the bowl the smoke gets carried with the air your sucking in, through the water there by filtering it.

The more water that the smoke has to travel through, the better filtering effect you are going to get out of it.

just make sure that the water level in the bong stays below the bowl (end of the douwtube), or else water will come out the bowl (basic physics)

if the end of the down tube inst under water, the water does not bubble or filter the smoke, therefore its not a bong

What I meant was keep the water level INSIDE below the opening for the stem on the OUTSIDE otherside the pressure will just make a bunch of water spill out of the bowl
