It's a cheap trick for color. Only try it at the end and the longer you keep it in there the more color you can get to a point. Too much and it just dies off. The cold and lack of food even thought you give it the proper light cycle will force the plant to use up stored energy. Just like the outdoors when you harvest in mid to late October.
